Cluey Tracker and Data Collection app

1 For what type of users is Cluey intended?

Rangers, tourist guides, researchers, field assistants, befriended allies and others who are at a good standing with the owners or managers of the nature reserve.

The purpose of collecting data may vary per group of users. Where researchers may be interested in recording observations of species, rangers may us it to record finds and illegal activities in the park, such as charcoal ovens (kilns), grazing animals, snares, trespassers, etc.

2 Do you need a smartphone to use Cluey?

Yes, you do. You do not, however, need to have cell coverage. Once you are back at the office and turn on your wifi, the observations will automatically be offloaded to the SCCSS Platform.

3 Does the Cluey Tracker app work in areas without cell cover?

Yes it does. If you turned on your tracks, these, as well as photos taken and recorded observations will be stored until you reach your office.

4 How is data being recorded?

Icons are being used to record your observations. You can add photos and free text as well.

5 Is the Cluey Tracker app customisable?

Yes. First, icons that are not relevant can be removed from the list. If you need an icon which is not on the list, you can suggest the new icon on the Wildlife Intelligence Forum.

Second, you can influence who has access to your observations by thinking about the setup of your projects. We can help you to create a smart structure.

Focus 360 Analytics app

1 For what type of users is Focus intended?

Focus has two target user groups.

First, analysts will be happy with Focus because it helps them to analyse all data available about the park, both internal and external data, and analyse it as if it is just one resource.

Second, commanders at command posts can use Focus to improve their situational awareness of the park, as ranger tracks, animal trackers, sensor alerts, and notes and alerts are being shown on the map in realtime.

2 Does Focus work without Internet?

By default Focus works online.

We can setup a replication service so you can work on premise when internet connectivity is poor or absent.

3 How can I add data to Focus?

Data can be fuelled into Focus in three ways:

  1. all data that is collected with Cluey is automatically made available in Focus
  2. local data can be uploaded through a private upload service. From there, the data will go through an automated semantic ETL-process, after which it is available in Focus. For each type of data source, we only have to setup this process once.
  3. incorporation of online data can be done in several ways, depending on your requirements.

4 Can we add new thematic filters?

Yes. You can suggest new concepts to be included at any time.

Thematic concepts that are not present in your data, are not shown.

5 What does the 360 stands for?

360 refers to a 360 degrees overview of your data. More is not possible 😉

6 What does the semantics technology actually do?

It turns syntactical data into semantical concepts. I hear you say, What?

Syntax is about the (correct) spelling of a word. Not about its meaning.

Semantics is about the meaning of a word. Much more interesting for an analyst!

For example, bike and bicycle are two words, both correctly spelled, but two different words nonetheless. People know that we are actually talking about the same thing. A computer does not.

Semantic technologies are being used to let the computer understand that these two words actually are referring to the same thing. This is handy, because with this understanding, you can use either of these two labels and find all records in your database that contain bikes and bicycles. Just like you would return these records when you would manually search for such thing.

Next to synonyms like bike and bicycle, we also use this technology to add knowledge about misspellings, nicknames, other languages, and even known brand names.

Moreover, by using semantic technologies, we can build in knowledge about how concepts are related. For example, a bike is a form of transport. So are a scooter and a car. Thus, when you are searching for a form of transport, but do not care about the type of transport that is being used, you can search for Means of Transport instead. Your search results will include all bikes, cars, trucks, and other means of transport, including the ones that have been misspelled.

Generic questions

1 What type of data does the SCCSS Platform support?

You name it, the Platform can eat it. By default Cluey data is the main source of data. With Cluey you can record tracks, observations, and responses to alerts (manual alerts and sensor alerts).

We currently distinguish between 4 types of track recording:

  • on Duty
  • on Patrol
  • on Human spoor
  • on Animal spoort

We currently distinguish between the following types of field recording:observations

  • observations
  • recoveries
  • offences
  • responses

2 Do you need an internet connection to use the platform?

Yes. However, the system can also be installed on premise. In that case, a wifi connection is sufficient to ensure that Cluey data is automatically uploaded to the platform.

3 How much training do you need to get started?

Little training is needed to use Cluey or Focus.

To get most out the system, however, it is wise to think through the various options you have to configure and use the system. We are happy to help you with that.

4 Is it possible to engage community members?

Yes, the system is designed to form groups on a trust basis. The project initiator can invite colleagues and friends, but only if he or she knows the email of that person.

Data that is collected within a given project, is being shared with all members of that project, but not with other projects.

For example, for census projects you may invite people who know the difference between one bird and another. For anti-poaching projects you may choose to invite guards and rangers only, etc.

5 Can data be fed into law enforcement authorities?

Yes. Data can be exported. You can also include law enforcement officers in your project. That way you can share your information with them in (near) realtime.

6 Can data be fed into forestry or REDD projects?

Yes. Data can be exported in csv and gephi-formats.

7 Who owns the data?

Who else but you?! You are the owner of the data and nobody but you decides who can see your data or use it. Database administrators and System Administrators of Sensing Clues are only granted access for troubleshooting purposes and only after explicit permission of the owner.

8 Where is the data being stored?

By default, the servers and databases are hosted by our sponsor BIT Internet Technology in the Netherlands. Hosting in other counties is possible. As internet connectivity is not always a given, the services can be replicated to local computers within the park. Analytical tools such as Focus, can run both on-premise as well as in the cloud.

9 Does the Cluey Tracker app work in areas without cell cover?

Yes. Data will be stored on the phone and be transmitted to the platform as soon as you reach an area with cell cover or wifi.

10 What is a beta-version?

A beta-version is a 0.9 version. That is, not completely bug free, but ready for field testing. During the field tests bugs and other problems may be found that will be solved before the mature 1.0-version of the tool is being released.

11 What languages do you support

The Cluey Tracker is highly icon-based, and thus easily to understand by non-native English speakers and ill-literate people.

In Focus, content is shown in the language in which the data is delivered. Moreover, in Focus graphs, icons are being used to allow for intuitive search for pattern.

The generic menu items and commands are English.
